\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Archaeological Parks of Paestum and Velia present a serious game dedicated to the founding of the ancient city and the philosophy of Parmenides. Funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the project combines research, technology and gamification to make cultural heritage more accessible. <\/em><\/strong>\r\n\r\n <\/em>\r\n\r\nFounding a city means making choices: where to settle, how to defend it, which resources to develop and how to govern it. These decisions shape \u201cELEA. A CITY TO FOUND<\/strong>\u201d, the serious game developed by the Archaeological Parks of Paestum and Velia and presented on 12 October 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at the Archaeological Park of Velia. The project transforms the history of ancient Elea and the philosophy of Parmenides into an interactive experience in which players are invited to tackle the challenges of building a community and face the consequences of their choices. \r\n\r\nDeveloped in collaboration with AMONG S.r.l. Societ\u00e0 Benefit<\/strong>, the game combines historical, archaeological and philosophical content in an experience that focuses on the interplay between different interests, the ability to build arguments and responsibility for decision-making. It is available in both digital and board game formats, with a dedicated online version for lower and upper secondary schools. \r\n\r\nThe project was developed with funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), financed by the European Union \u2013 NextGenerationEU, under Mission 1 \u201cDigitalisation, Innovation, Competitiveness and Culture\u201d, Component 3 \u201cTourism and Culture 4.0\u201d, Measure 1 \u201cCultural Heritage for the Next Generation\u201d. The initiative falls under Investment 1.2 \u201cRemoval of Physical and Cognitive Barriers in Museums, Libraries and Archives to Enable Wider Access to and Participation in Culture\u201d, as part of Action Line 7 \u201cTraining of Cultural Professionals\u201d, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the value and accessibility of cultural heritage through innovative technologies and gamification methodologies. \r\n\r\n\u201cELEA. A CITY TO FOUND<\/strong>\u201d offers an approach to cultural heritage based on active participation. Understanding the ancient city means exploring the challenges its inhabitants faced: organising spaces, securing resources, establishing relationships with other communities and building a lasting social and political balance. The starting point is the story of the Phocaeans who, fleeing the Persian advance, crossed the Mediterranean and reached the coast of Cilento, where they founded Elea in the 6th century BC. The game invites participants to adopt the perspective of that community at a time when the city’s future had yet to be determined. \r\n\r\nThe game unfolds over five rounds focusing on the location of dwellings, defence, public buildings and communal spaces, growth strategies and forms of government. Participants represent five groups within society \u2013 priests, warriors, builders, farmers and merchants \u2013 each with its own needs, yet all sharing the fate of the same city. Decisions are discussed, justified and voted upon, affecting the polis’s resources, infrastructure, defences, relationships and social cohesion, as well as the balance of power between the groups. \r\n\r\nIn the final phase, the \u201cTest of History\u201d, unexpected events put the community that has been built to the test. Crises, conflicts and new opportunities reveal the resilience of the decisions made and the city’s vulnerabilities. The experience encourages participants to understand the relationship between their choices and circumstances beyond a community’s control, demonstrating how every decision brings benefits, costs and consequences. \r\n\r\nThe philosophy of Parmenides provides the foundation for the game’s mechanics: decisions made during the different rounds follow the perspectives of Doxa (the interests of individual groups) and Aletheia (the interests of the city as a whole), while decision-making deadlocks are resolved by the Grammateus<\/em> using a special \u201cParmenidean algorithm\u201d.\r\n\r\nTechnology and gamification serve as tools for cultural engagement. The digital version creates additional opportunities to explore the history of Elea, allowing the game to be used both in classrooms and beyond visits to the Archaeological Park. The application takes on the role of the Grammateus, the figure who guides the game, explains the consequences of decisions and resolves deadlocks through Parmenidean logic. \r\n\r\nThe game’s mechanics transform complex concepts into situations that participants can actively explore. Taking on a role, discussing alternatives, casting votes and observing their consequences provide participants with tools to understand the relationships between different aspects of life in an ancient city. Engagement becomes an integral part of the learning process: every choice requires participants to connect information, formulate hypotheses and compare different perspectives. \r\n\r\nIn terms of archaeological heritage enhancement, this approach opens up new ways of interpreting material remains. Dwellings, fortifications, sanctuaries, harbours and the surrounding landscape can be understood through their functions within community life and the relationships that connected them. The game thus provides a new perspective for exploring the archaeological site with greater awareness, recognising in its spaces and remains the traces of a history shaped by people, needs and decisions. \r\n\r\nThe project benefited from the collaboration of the Italian Philosophical Society, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Archaeological Parks of Paestum and Velia and the related Implementation Agreement dedicated to testing and promoting the game in schools. The presentation provided an opportunity to discuss the educational applications of \u201cELEA. A CITY TO FOUND<\/strong>\u201d, strengthening dialogue between cultural institutions, the scientific community and the education sector. \r\n\r\nThe project was developed with the support of the Directorate-General for Museums, as part of the gaming initiatives included in the Communication Plan for the PNRR investment aimed at improving accessibility to cultural sites. This support forms part of a broader strategy to innovate the visitor experience and encourage wider participation in cultural heritage, as highlighted by Roberto Vannata, Head of Service II at the Directorate-General for Museums<\/strong>: \u201cThe PNRR investment dedicated to accessibility in cultural sites, coordinated by the Directorate-General for Museums, has provided an extraordinary opportunity to improve the quality of the visitor experience through interventions at cultural sites, professional training, communication and experimentation with new forms of expression. From this perspective, the Communication Plan also included a dedicated call for gaming projects, recognising games as a tool capable of expanding opportunities for participation and bringing new audiences closer to cultural heritage. \u2018Elea. A City to Found\u2019 embodies this vision particularly effectively: it brings together research, archaeology, philosophy and participation, offering a new way to explore the history of the ancient city. Experiences of this kind contribute to the development of the National Museum System and strengthen museums’ ability to engage with diverse audiences.\u201d <\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cELEA. A City to Found\u201d stems from this vision and from collaboration between institutions, researchers and professionals with different areas of expertise,\u201d<\/em> says Tiziana D\u2019Angelo, Director of the Archaeological Parks of Paestum and Velia<\/strong>. \u2013 \u201cThis project strengthens the Park’s role as a place of knowledge and education, offering schools and visitors new opportunities to explore the city’s history and philosophical tradition. Through participation and discussion, the game encourages players to understand the complexity of life in an ancient community and the importance of the decisions that shape its future. It offers a different and engaging way to tell the story of Elea, with a focus on developing civic awareness. Innovation thus becomes a tool supporting the Parks’ educational mission, promoting a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and strengthening the connection between younger generations and cultural sites.\u201d <\/em>\r\n\r\n\u201cThe challenge was to create a simple and accessible game without sacrificing the richness of the experience,\u201d says Annamaria Gimigliano, creator and co-author of the serious game. \u201cThe solution was to incorporate Parmenides’ philosophy into the game’s mechanics and offer historically plausible alternatives, allowing players to build dozens of different cities.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nWith this initiative, the Archaeological Parks of Paestum and Velia continue their commitment to heritage education and to experimenting with tools that promote broader and more inclusive access to culture.
